Hi, my name is Tyler Brooking and I was born and raised in Oklahoma. I am 21 years of age and am currently a Senior at the University of Oklahoma. My major is Petroleum Engineering and I am not currently pursuing any minors. I was first attracted to the oil & gas industry because my father was a land man and did abstracts and deeds for property owners of oil wells. I later became more interested in the fact of how much that America and the world demands energy each and every day. The common misconception that oil & gas is just used for making gas and jet fuel is inaccurate. Without it many accessories, plastics, and polymers we enjoy as consumers would not exist, and it is because of this that I am intrigued at this business. In addition, natural gas plants are producing electricity at a far better economic rate than coal and is a much cleaner burning fuel than coal. All in all, these are a few reasons of why I chose to become a petroleum engineer.

My hobbies include golfing, DIY projects, the outdoors, and spending time with my friends and family. I have been an avid golfer since the age of 5 and have loved it ever since. Another thing I consider a hobby of mine are “do it yourself” projects. I enjoy learning how to fix things around a house or car to save myself money or friends and family money. Fishing and hunting are other recreational activities I enjoy when I have the time. And lastly but not least I enjoy spending time with my family, and having “get together’s”. My favorite holiday is always thanksgiving because of the vast amount of food, family, and friends that show up to celebrate it.

In addition, one of my favorite things to do is travel. I enjoy going new places and playing new golf courses wherever I go. There is a golf course just about anywhere you travel and I like to play one in every state, country, or island I visit.

ReplyDeleteHey Tyler, glad to see another Petroleum Engineer here, I have to say the reason that brought me to study in this field is almost the same as you, it is fascinating how the whole world needs Oil & Gas to function. Although I am not a huge fan of golfing, my house in Dubai is right next to a huge golf club where Tiger Woods always plays at when he is there. Anyway, now that you mention Thanksgiving, you must know that besides Burgers, I am a huge fan of Thanksgiving dinner. Anyhow, good luck this semester and looking forward to your future posts.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back, Tyler! That was so cool last semester where there was a small army of petroleum engineering people in the class. This time around I think it is you and Andrew from before, plus Ahmed. So, you are not an army this time around, but it was fun to set up a blog group with the three of you. I had never tried to put people into the first week blog groups based on majors, but it worked out better than I expected, so I think I will do that in the future... and then from here on out, it will just be the power of random at work. And of course the readings are all over the place in this class compared to Indian Epics, so I hope you will have fun with all that, and I am looking forward to seeing what stories will get your attention this time around. ReplyDeleteI always tend to forget that oil and gas go into so many other everyday objects that get overlooked, but that’s a great point, and a really interesting reason to pursue Petroleum Engineering as a career. Also, as great as traveling is in general, I love the idea of incorporating something related to a hobby at every new destination—it’s something I haven’t heard of before now, but would love to start doing in the future. ReplyDeleteHey Tyler, I always forget about the many uses that the oil and gas industry provides all of us with. I know you mentioned coal, but have you done much research into alternative fuels? A lot of people say they are the future. It's really cool how you do DIY projects. I always think about doing some myself but am never quite sure where to start. Best of luck to you!
ReplyDeleteThe oil and gas industry is booming and it is a great major to get into. I am from Houston so many of my friends' parents work in the industry. I love to travel as well and my father likes to play golf, so he always manages to find the local golf course wherever we may be.
ReplyDeleteHi! I always admire people who major in any type of engineering, it seems like something that is very difficult and I just don't think I would be able to do it! I think it's really cool that you are into golf, I have family members who compete in events and have made a living off of playing golf. It's a great sport.

ReplyDeleteMy mom got her degree in petroleum engineering and all of the stuff that she discusses with me is usually way over my head. Though on occasion she asks me about certain types of microorganisms normally found in oil wells and fuel tanks since I am in my last year of getting a degree in microbiology. It is funny because I am currently helping with research that focuses on the type of bacteria and fungi that cause the corrosion of fuel tanks with the Air Force. It is so cool how when you think about it, you can find connections between all the different fields of research and science.

ReplyDeleteJust from reading your post I can see how passionate you are about your field of study. Is there any specific company you want to work for within the oil and gas field? Like you, I am an avid fan of DIY. Unfortunately, I get my ideas from Pinterest and they don't always turn out the way I want them to. What is your favorite DIY project the you have done thus far? From your post it sounds like you really enjoy the outdoors, hopefully you are still able to enjoy your hobbies while in Norman! Outside of playing actual golf, do you enjoy doing golf-like activities like the driving range and top golf? I just went to my first driving range this summer and I really enjoyed it, but I know it is very different from actual golf! I really enjoyed your post and I look forward to reading more of your stuff!!

That's awesome that your dad inspired you to get into the field. Have you done any internship work with him or any of his associates? I'm awful at golf so good on you because it is not an easy sport. Where do you usually go to play in Norman? I can't wait to read some of your stories!
Hi Tyler! I saw in your About Me section that you're from Edmond. I am from Edmond as well! It's a great town. I grew up in a golfing family and have been around it for pretty much my whole life. Your passion for the oil and gas industry and commitment to studying Potroleum Engineering is inspiring. You have some cool hobbies. I have only tried to play gulf one time. I was not very good, but I am sure it takes a lot of practice . I did enjoy driving the gulf cart though! My only hobby is art (drawling/painting) unfortunately I am a full time pre-law student with seven children (blended family) so I don't really have time to paint much anymore. Maybe when school is done I will have time to get back into it. Good luck with school and starting your career.

I personally am not that great at it...they are though. Once I started "playing" I realized how difficult and tedious the sport was. Also, your golf passion is really cool- my grandparents have always been into golf, so I played anytime I would go visit them. I've never been really good at it though, soccer is more my sport. Oh my gosh Happy Gilmore is the greatest movie ever. I saw a really funny picture on Twitter during this whole clown ordeal that was Happy saying you're gonna die clown and I could not stop laughing. Golf might be the sport that makes me the most angry because I always slice my shot and it really bother me. Look forward to reading your stories.
ReplyDeleteHi Tyler! I think your major is really impressive and I have a few PE major friends so I know how difficult the classes are. All of that stuff confuses me to no end so I think its really impressive that it is what you are pursuing. I also love hunting and being outside. My ideal weekend is spent on my family's ranch just being outside. Thanksgiving is awesome and I am really looking forward to it this year. My mouth is watering just thinking of all the food!
